Measurement of the tendon of the biceps brachii after tenotomy: study on cadavers☆

چکیده
OBJECTIVE To evaluate the influence of elbow and forearm range of motion on the distal excursion of the long head of the biceps (LHB). METHODS The distal excursion of the LHB after tenotomy of the shoulders of eight cadavers was ascertained by measuring the distance between a point marked out on the LHB, 3 cm from the anterolateral border of the acromion, and its position at different degrees of elbow flexion, using a digital pachymeter. The measurements at elbow flexion of 135°, 90°, 45° and 0° were noted: these angles were established using a goniometer. The measurements were made with the forearm in neutral, supination and pronation positions. RESULTS Differences between the mean measurements of the distal excursion of the LHB (total sample) were observed between the degrees of elbow flexion (p < 0.01). However, no statistical differences were observed between the different forearm positions, between the sides, genders and ages of the cadavers studied. CONCLUSION Progressive extension of the elbow caused progressive distal excursion of the LHB, but without interference in the forearm position, gender, side or age of the cadavers studied.

Tenotomy versus Tenodesis in the treatment of the long head of biceps brachii tendon lesions
BACKGROUND The superiority of tenotomy vs. tenodesis for surgery on lesions of the long head of the biceps brachii tendon is still under debate. Indeed, high-quality evidence is lacking, mainly because of methodological problems, such as retrospective design, population sample size or lack of patient randomization. METHODS/DESIGN The study will be a two-center, double-blind, randomized, contr...
متن کاملTenotomy versus tenodesis in the management of pathologic lesions of the tendon of the long head of the biceps brachii.
BACKGROUND Primary and secondary lesions of the tendon of the long head of the biceps brachii are common, with no clear consensus about their optimal management. HYPOTHESIS There is no difference in outcomes of tenotomy and tenodesis for lesions of the tendon of the long head of the biceps brachii. STUDY DESIGN We performed a comprehensive quantitative review of the published English-langua...
متن کاملLoop biceps tenotomy: an arthroscopic technique for long head of biceps tenotomy.
The long head of the biceps tendon is frequently involved in shoulder pathologies, often in relation to inflammatory or degenerative damage to the rotator cuff. Biceps tenodesis in the bicipital groove and tenotomy are the main treatment options. Tenotomy of the long head of the biceps tendon is a simpler and quicker procedure than tenodesis, and it does not require the use of implants. However...
متن کاملPreliminary Result of Arthroscopic Keyhole Biceps Tenodesis A Novel Technique
There is increased interest of the orthopedic surgeons in treating the pathology of long head of biceps. Although there is some clarity in the result of biceps tenotomy, it is not so clear concerning tenodesis. An open keyhole tenodesis of biceps is shrouded with concerns of primary stability, use of deltopectoral incision, operative pain, technical difficulty to access biceps tendon in case of...
متن کاملBiomechanical and histological analysis after tenotomy of the long head of the biceps in the rabbit shoulder model.
Tenotomy of the long head of the biceps tendon (LHBT) is gaining popularity in shoulder surgery. We evaluated biomechanical and histological changes after tenotomy in a rabbit LHBT tenotomy model to confirm that autotenodesis is a phenomenon that occurs after the procedure. Twenty-three rabbits were included. The right shoulder was harvested from 10 randomly selected rabbits. The shoulders were...
